A conversation in train - Real Story

Image
Mr. Vivek Pradhan was not a happy man. He was the project manager and still not entitled to air travel. It was not the prestige he sought, he had tried to reason with the admin person, it was the savings in time. He opened his case and took out the laptop, determined to put the time to some good use. 'Are you from the software industry sir?,' the man beside him was staring appreciatively at the laptop.Vivek glanced briefly and mumbled in affirmation, handling the laptop now with exaggerated care and importance as if it were an expensive car. 'You people have brought so much advancement to the country, Sir. Today everything is getting computerized.' ''Thanks,' smiled Vivek, turning around to give the man a look. He always found it difficult to resist appreciation. 'You people always amaze me,' the man continued, 'You sit in an office and write something on a computer and it does so many big things outside.' Vivek smiled deprecatingly. Naivenes

The Student’s Prayer - From email

Image
The Student’s Prayer Don’t impose on me what you know, I want to explore the unknown And be the source of my own discoveries. Let the known be my liberation, not my slavery. The world of your truth can be my limitation; Your wisdom my negation. Don’t instruct me; let’s walk together. Let my richness begin where yours ends. Show me so that I can stand On your shoulders. Reveal yourself so that I can be Something different. You believe that every human being Can love and create. I understand, then, your fear When I ask you to live according to your wisdom. You will not know who I am By listening to yourself. Don’t instruct me; let me be. Your failure is that I be identical to you.”

Appreciate what you have - Good story

One day, a wealthy family man took his son on a trip to a village, so that he could have his son see how poor people live. They stayed one day and one night in the home of a very humble farmer. At the end of the trip, when they were back home, the father asked his son, "What did you think of the trip?" The son replied "Very nice Dad" Then the father asked the son, "Did you notice, how poor they were?" and continued asking, "What did you learn?" The son responded, "I learned that, we have one dog in our house, and they have four" "Also we have a fountain in our garden, but they have a stream that has no end" "We have imported lamps in our garden, whereas they have stars and our garden goes to the edge of property, but they have the entire horizon as their backyard." At the end of son's reply, the father was speechless. His son then said, "Thank you Dad, for showing me how poor we really are." Let us lea

One more feather in our cap - Nobel Prize 2009

Image
One more feather is added to our cap in the form of Nobel Prize for the year 2009. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2009: The ribosome's translation of DNA information into life. Ribosomes produce proteins, which in turn control the chemistry in all living organisms. As ribosomes are crucial to life, they are also a major target for new antibiotics. This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry awards Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath for having showed what the ribosome looks like and how it functions at the atomic level. All three have used a method called X-ray crystallography to map the position for each and every one of the hundreds of thousands of atoms that make up the ribosome. Inside every cell in all organisms, there are DNA molecules. They contain the blueprints for how a human being, a plant or a bacterium, looks and functions. But the DNA molecule is passive. If there was nothing else, there would be no life. The blueprints become transformed i

What is philosophy

Image
Philosophy is one word some people are obsessed with, but many would run away on just hearing the word. Let us know something about it for the moment atleast. Philosophy originated 2,500 years ago with Pythagoras, best known to most of us for his mathematical explorations. Pythagoras led a remarkable life, even by today’s standards. As a teenager he made his way from Greece to Egypt, where he spent ten years training as a temple initiate. His career was interrupted by the Persians, who raided Egypt and took Pythagoras back to Babylon as a slave. Ten years later, his learning and wisdom earned him his freedom; but then, rather than returning to his native Greece, he remained in Babylon for another ten years, studying mathematics in the mystery schools. When he did eventually return home, he established a community in Southern Italy, where he shared with his students much of what he had learned over the years. A puzzle to his contemporaries, Pythagoras’ life did not fit any conventional

Charles Schultz Philosophy

Image
The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point. 1.. Name the five wealthiest people in the world. 2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners. 3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America Contest. 4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.. 5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress. 6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners. How did you do? The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. They are not second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners. Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one: 1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school. 2.. Name three friends who ha

Unconditional love - Aware of it

Image
What can our children give us in return? This is a very simple question, anyone would rush to answer. A kiss, a hug, warmth, a shoulder when we feel tired, an abode when we become old and what not. The list goes endlessly. Are we aware that our children give us an experience called Unconditional love? Yesterday, as my daily routine, I was making my son's lunch bag ready. I had bought a dozen of oranges on the previous day for my children. This time, the oranges were really good. On their appearance itself they revealed their good taste and freshness. I took two oranges and peeledout the skins. The heavyness of the fruit spelled the huge quantity of juice in them. I felt very happy to serve such a good stuff to my son. I called my son an said, "Dear, the fruit is very good and full of juice. Take it." He ran towards the table where I kept his lunch bag and saw the pieces of orange in the cup. After seeing the pieces he asked me, "Dad, did you eat some?" His eye

Power of giving - A Story that inspires

There is a story of an elderly carpenter who was ready to retire. The carpenter told his employer of his plans to leave the house-building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife, enjoying his extended family. The employer was sorry to see his employee go and asked if he would build just one more house as a personal favor to him. The carpenter reluctantly agreed. He did sloppy work and he used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career. When the carpenter finished his work, the employer came to inspect the house. Then he handed the front-door key to the carpenter. “This is your house,” he said. “It is my retirement gift to you.” The carpenter was shocked. If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. So it is with all people. Every person builds his or her own house, his or her own life, a step at a time, often half-heartedly. Then with a shock they realize they have to live in the house they hav

It is India's first eight-lane freeway over the open sea and is hailed as a modern Indian engineering marvel. Few statistics about the bridge are: The bridge weighs 670,000 tons, which is equivalent to 50000 African elephants, the length of the bridge is 4.77 km, the height of the cable-stayed tower is 126m(equal to a 43-storey tower), and the length of steel wires used in the p

Recently one of my friends expressed his worries about his son who is just over eleven years of age. I understood by his words that his son is annoyingly playful. He said that he has tried for several years to correct him but miserably failed and he looked tired. "Every time he comes back with broken pieces of the toy that I bought for him on previous day" and went on "He doesn't stop there, but climbs on the loft, the tree and what not. I am afraid that one day he 's gonna break his legs..." I stopped him at one point and said, "All children are like this only, Don't worry, he will be alright soon." But he seemed unconvinced. "No; No; My son is not like other children, He is mischievous. You come and see our suffering. Every day I am praying god to him 'Budhdhi'." after an array of words he started to move away. I understood that, it was not the right time to pass my advice. I feel that all of us are wearing different kinds o

Just for laugh - Obsessive responses

Image
It had been very long since I met my good old friend. There was no specific reason for us for not being able to meet for so long. It was just that, we never felt like missing someone. But I was blessed with too many occasions, such as family functions, Association meetings, party functions and so on, to be in company with my friends. One such occasion, I mention here is more memorable for the simple reason that, it brought me big laughter. It was a family function of one of my friend. When I was looking out for my other friends to turn up, a very close friend of mine (who was my class mate and my best family friend) entered the big function hall with broad smile. I was juiced up the moment I saw him. I rushed to him and we exchanged our affection by greeting each other. We talked about everything that had happened to each one us in humourous way. We spent about an hour by chatting. A few days before our meeting, I was told that his wife is under going medical treatment. From then on my

Total Solar Eclipse of this century - Don't Miss it

Image
On Wednesday, 2009 July 22, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan's Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s. ( longest eclipse till 2132) A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes most of eastern Asia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Ocean. The eclipse begins at 5.28 a.m. (IST) when the shadow of the moon touches the earth at local sunrise point in the Arabian Sea, close to the western coast of India. The eclipse ends at 10.42 a.m. (IST) when the moon's shadow finally leaves the earth at local sunset point in the South Pacific Ocean. Child exploitation and Child abuse

Image
Recently in the newspapers, one might not have missed to read the horrific news of a child abuse. A teen aged boy from Orissa was abused under custody by a barbaric house owner at various times at chennai. The article went on to reveal that such kind of atrocities continue at several places. These uncivilized people hire small children as servant maids for their houses or for other unorganised sectors like tea shops, hotels, automobile workshops etc. Employement of poor children has been existing since long ago. I have witnessed some of my school mates during 70's had worked in match factories, hand loom industries in a most depressing environment, receiving small money but heavy punishments. At one corner, our country is enjoying "India shining" campaign. On the other corner we fail to notice the atrocities against children. Whenever I hear such stories of child harassment, I arouse pity and wonder how people behave in such a horrendous manner against small children, who

Nageshwar Temple - Dwaraka

Image
Nageshwar Temple in Dwaraka . Nageshwar near Dwarka in Gujarat is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga Shrines of Shiva. Lord Krishna Himself used to worship it and perform Rudrabhishekam. It is located on the route between Dwarka and the Bet Dwarka island, on the coast of Saurashtra in Gujarat. The Rudra Samhita sloka refers to Nageshwar with the phrase 'Daarukaavane Naagesham'. Dvaraka is one of the Sapta-puris or seven holy towns - Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Kasi, Ujjin, Kancipuram and Dvaraka - and one of the four Dhamas or holy places - Ramesvaram, Puri, Badrinath and Dvaraka. Pandavas came here during their Vanavas to build a hermitage for themselves. Their cows used to go to the same river bank to drink water. After drinking water, m il k used to flow automatically into the river as if the cows were offering to the river. One day Bhima saw this mirac u lo us event and told Dharmaraja about the same. Then Dharmaraja said, “Surely, some great God must be livi
