Dharbhai - An article by TRS Iyengar

This article is on one of the practices widely used by Indian Brahmins all over using a Holy Grass named Dharbham or Dharbai. In all functions, auspicious or inauspicious, a performing person needs to wear a ring made of this Dharbham. But many have lost the reason of why it is to be used in the first place. What I learnt from my father is proved to be accurately correct by a Medicine Practitioner. A Doctor named Sadhashiv Rao, once visited my home. When the topic turned to many subjects, I needed to tell him about the Holy Grass namedDharbham. When I told him about the usage and the values, he could not just believe my words. So, he took out a bunch of the Dharbham from me, went straight to the clinic to take an x-ray of his palm, by covering his hand with the Dharbham. To his utter surprise, he found that the grass absorbed about 60% of the radiation! When the so powerful X-ray radiation can be absorbed by the Holy Grass, why can it not absorb the ill radiations spread over the atmosph

Recently I had an opportunity to participate in an international seminar on biodiversity at Mysore. The main objective of the 3 day seminar was to discuss urgent measures to be embraced to save our mother nature. Eminent personalites from various part of our country & abroad and research scholars had attended the seminar, presented papers and posters on different topics in which mine was one among 90 contributions. The entire function was thought provoking and a grand treat to intellect. Inaugural function was attended by persons of highest position. Shri. Madhavan nair (former chairman, ISRO), Shri. Binoy viswam (Hon'ble Minister for housing & forests, Kerala) Padmashree.M.Mahadevappa to name a few and others in similar position have attended the function and many of them stayed till the valedictory function. I knew that many politicians possess the knack of addressing public gathering on political matters with eloquence and ease. But very rarely I came across politicians

A Nice poem by a dying child

SLOW DANCE Have you ever watched kids On a merry-go-round? Or listened to the rain Slapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight? Or gazed at the sun into the fading night? You better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. Do you run through each day On the fly? When you ask How are you? Do you hear the reply? When the day is done Do you lie in your bed With the next hundred chores Running through your head? You'd better slow down Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. Ever told your child, We'll do it tomorrow? And in your haste, Not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch, Let a good friendship die Cause you never had time To call and say,'Hi' You'd better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. When you run so fast to get somewhere You miss half the fun of getting there. When you worry and hurry through your day, It is like an unopened gift....

Reflection of our mind - Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam's letter

Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why? We are the first in milk production. We are number one in Remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice. Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters. I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The

Strained relationships - Make the right choice

One of my friend complained of an unpleasent situation prevailing in his home. He told that his mother, who is a working woman, asked him to step out of her house along with his wife and kid. He went on to say that this was not the first time but few more times earlier his mother comprehended this statement in many occasions. I enquired further and understood that there is big gap between his mother's expectations and his wife's reciprocations. This is indeed not new in joint system of family in our culture. In earlier days, i.e in male dominant days these incidents never rose to this level, but women sentiments were sacrificed and buried. Today, things are different. Women are at par with their partner both in education and in bringing wealth to the family. So side effects (both positive & negative) are bound to come as package whether fellow members of the family like it or not. But unfortunately, everyone welcomes only the wealth but not their evolution. This is the rea
