கதிரவனின் சுழற்சியை கொண்டு வகுக்கப்பட்ட தினத்தை வைத்து கொண்டாடப்படும் ஒரே பண்டிகை "பொங்கல்"தான் என்று சொல்லலாம். உத்ராயனத்தின் முதல் தினமாக "பொங்கல்கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. உத்தராயணம், கதிரவன் வடக்கு நோக்கி பயணிக்கும் நாட்கள். நமது கலாச்சாரத்தில் உத்தராயணம் மிகுந்த முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்ததாக கருதப்படுகிறது.
